Ilima is a shrub or sprawling ground cover with small yellow-to-orange hibiscus-like flowers. The species is typically found on beaches and among lowland shrubs and forests. It is found naturally from China to eastern Polynesia. Ilima is highly esteemed in Hawaiian culture for making garland lei which requires many hundreds of delicate paper-thin blossoms strung together. The plant was also used as a traditional Hawaiian medicine during pregnancy and for asthma.
